Soft, hard is an intentionally non-functional sculpture that uses repetition to emphasise the intersection between art and design. The multiple forms are cast individually using the slip-cast method and assembled to create an impression of chairs accompanied by a side table. The usual nature of both the chair and pillows are soft, yet I have chosen to use materials that would cause discomfort due to their hard and fragile nature. This sculpture has thematic links to the domestic environment. I wanted to convey these contemporary ideas in a traditional silhouette, using our familiarity with a domestic setting to subvert our understanding of comfort. The chair and the pillow are often invisible objects that relate to rest and recuperation. Soft, hard was created to turn the domesticity of furniture and household objects on its head, challenging our perception of reliable forms.
