Crystal’s ceramic practice explores a relationship between gesture and time to open a discourse regarding the internalised ideas of time commodification. Reflection is an important part of understanding lived experiences. The time taken to reflect and build understanding, especially through times of hardship and intense stress, often leave an individual feeling time has been lost, wasted, or in need of justification.
The way one’s body moves through time can be synthesised in a material form through combining action and the malleable clay material. The gesture of indenting the clay is repetitive in nature and provides therapeutic relief, the actions lean into a form of ritualistic support when processing lived experience. The work acts as a collection of experiences and periods of time embodied in physical clay forms. The composition undulates with the intention of displaying the reading, exploring, and reinterpreting that occurs within the cyclic nature of coping.
